What’s Up in May?

Merely thinking about the action, romance, comedy and fantasy promised by this year’s May movie schedule makes my endorphins kick in. But it’s the anticipation of another Indiana Jones adventure that has me as excited as a two-year-old with a new toy. Here are the upcoming releases for May 2008:

MAY 1

Iron Man. Whoohoo! This super-hero action movie can’t open soon enough for me. I’m extremely eager to see Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark, a wealthy industrialist who creates an awesome iron suit -- which he uses, naturally, to fight evil in the world.

MAY 2

Made of Honor. Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan co-star in this romantic comedy about a platonic friendship that turns into love. When Dempsey’s character is asked to be his gal pal’s maid of honor, he realizes she’s the one for him. What’s a guy to do? Try to win her for himself, of course.

Son of Rambow. Two little boys make a home movie titled Son of Rambow in this unusual British comedy. Directed by Garth Jennings, the film features Will Poulter and Bill Milner as the ambitious youngsters. .

MAY 9

Speed Racer. Emile Hirsch portrays a young man who lives to race in this live-action film based on a Japanese TV series. With the help of his girl friend and parents, our speedy hero hopes to win The Crucible. The impressive cast also includes Susan Sarandon, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox and John Goodman. However, after viewing the frenetic trailer for this movie, I’m forced to issue a migraine warning.

Redbelt. A top mixed-martial arts instructor, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, refuses to take part in prize bouts, but he changes his mind because of compelling circumstances. Tim Allen, Alice Braga and Joe Mantegna also appear in this David Mamet drama.

What Happens in Vegas. What’s so funny about two people waking up in Las Vegas after a wild night and finding themselves married to each other? Almost everything, especially if the man and woman in question are played by Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz.

MAY 16

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The Pevensie siblings go back to Narnia, but a thousand years have passed in that land since their first visit. All is not well there, so the Pevensies must help to put things right again, this time by making sure Prince Caspian is not prevented from assuming his rightful place as the ruler of Narnia. I hope the White Witch, played by Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, returns in this second Narnia adventure. I’m also expecting more gorgeous visuals and eye-popping special effects.

MAY 22

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  We’ve been waiting for this fourth installment of Indy’s exciting adventures since 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Here’s the important cast list: Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent. Bring it on!!!

MAY 30

Sex and the City: The Movie. This film version of the popular HBO series stars the sexy actresses who made the television offering so successful: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. Fans will also be happy to learn that Mr. Big (Chris Noth) looks great on the big screen.

The Strangers. In this scary thriller, Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play a couple terrorized by three strangers while staying in an isolated vacation house. Watch out, villains! Your victims are willing to take surprising actions in order to survive.
